New song

Post by TheSystem (Archive) »

I got a resonator last year and finally got around to recording a track with it.

This song has lyrics but I have been too lazy to mix them but plan to add them soon.

Jamstix of course makes this so much easier and fun.

I hope you like it.

This is also the first tune I used my Kemper on since getting it. The only electric guitar part is the solo which is the Kemper.

Very nice song and very good Jamstix work. I couldn't understand the lyrics, though :P

Coincidently, after a conversation, tonight my wife wanted to know exactly the lyrics of "Money for Nothing", as she didn't know the story behind the song. By seeing the video she asked if the main riff was played with the guitar from the image, the resonator. Oh no, it is not that, that is a beautiful instrument called resonator. Let's hear a couple of songs with it. She knew and likes Romeo and Juliet, but didn't know that it was played with that kind of strange guitar. It was my perfect pretext for hearing some more Dire Straits songs and seeing Mr. Buttoner playing some pieces.

Hi Brian,
Not a criticism since I'm not a Country music listener but the lead tone for the solo is way too hi-gain and compressed for the song I feel. Definitely needs more picking dynamics. The playing is good but it feels like it was tacked on almost as an afterthought the way it is sitting in the mix instead of being where the song was building towards. Again, just my opinion.

Hello a_zimuth:

when you say “solo” do you mean the drive part at almost the end or the multiple solo parts with the resonator? I am not native English speaker (as you can note) and had never used the word tacked. If I understand well its use here in mix context it is what I feel with the resonator parts, where one can hear maybe too much detail of the instrument and it is “over imposed” to the rest instead of mixed. With the drive solo I don’t feel that too much.

But, as the mix has no lyrics yet, I guess Brian hasn’t reached yet a final mix of the whole song. When the voice enters, one must rebalance other things, too.

These are constructive critics of course.

i will probably redo that part with less gain.

i found an awesome free Cornford profile and used it because i loved the sound but like you said a_zimuth. a bit too much.

i am going to find a tone similar to what Brent Mason used in this song around 2:10 to see if that works better.

still dirty but much cleaner.

Knopf_

i will do a re-balance once i get the vocals ready.

that reso part is way too up front in the mix for vocals.

thanks to both of you for losing and providing constructions and objective ideas.

Hi Knopf,

Actually I was referring to the electric Guitar solo towards the end of the song and after having just gone back to listen to it again, I retract my "tacked on" statement. It is very well constructed and fits well. I still feel that the electric Guitar tone is far too "Metal sounding" for this type of song. The playing is very good as I said, if you're reading this Brian.

"Tacked on" as I used it refers to something that was added, in a less than ideal manner, to an object at the last minute because that "something" was unintentionally overlooked during creating the object.

Your English is better than a lot of the people I encounter in the US every day and infinitely better than my German.

That is definitely more along the lines of what my ears were expecting Brian. I do think you could go even significantly dirtier with the solo tone than that as long as you can preserve the string & picking dynamics. Great solo by the way, I really like the flow of it.

the solo was the LAST thing i did. i am going through some new tones now.

i really like the tone of the cornford. i am going to start there with less gain and maybe a touch of compression.

what a great player. so much taste and feel IMO.
