Groove Import mapping questions

Post by willowhaus »

(Figured I should start a new thread, since I have more questions!)

Say I have some MIDI files formatted for BFD. I would like to import these as grooves into JS. Do I need to select the appropriate mapping prior to import? Does that affect the actual MIDI, or am I just telling JS "play this as a BFD file"?

And: once I have imported them, can I change the mapping within JS to another drum plugin (SSD4 for example)? Or would I (in SSD4) have to set up the VSTi to read the BFD mapping?

The groove importer needs to know the format at the time of import. You select that in the load dialog at the bottom.

Once imported, the data is stored by kit piece (not MIDI key) so it will ouput correctly on any kit you choose in JS, including MIDI output to SSD4 etc.

Sweet! That's what I wanted to hear! :)

Also important: is there any quantization done at all? (I assume no, but I do want to confirm.) The grooves I'm working with are recordings of actual drummers, so of course I want the timing preserved.

Quantization is controlled with the 'Quantize MIDI Import' checkbox in the Jamstix OPTIONS window.

I don't see a BFD OPTION on importing midi and have to use GM. Is that the same for everyone.

I don't use BFD but if you have a BFD kit loaded couldn't you just select "Use Current Kit Map"?
