What is the value of using external drum sounds?

Post by Sun_Tzu »

I was wondering, are drum sounds from EZ Drummer, BFD, etc. noticably superior to the sounds included with JS?

What would be the advantage to using external sounds, especially since for most recordings the host's fx will usually come into play?

The provided samples that come with JS XL sound [b:f71ab8e2b0]great [/b:f71ab8e2b0]to me, so I can't imagine that all those 3rd party sounds can really be so vastly superior (no pun intended). Thoughts?

There are some sounds from other Drum software that may be more suited for certain styles. The heavily compressed and studio affected sounds of say Addictive drums seem to suit the ,"Metal" style more.
For me JS has enough good sounds to work with or now :)

^^^ This.

My current drum setup, which I'm pretty happy with, uses Jamstix for all of the cymbals and Steven Slate Drums for the snare, kick, and toms. The JS MetalPak just can't do what I need, though the samples are still really good.

Simply use what sounds good to you.
I don´t consider AD heavily compressed or effect- treated though (that would be SSD). These are raw samples that can be treated within the plugin itself.
I used to have Toontrack Superior but sold it a long time ago.
Today mainly AD plus Jamstix, sometimes SSD.
