Music and Linux

Hi,

I had my first experience with a Linux system: I have installed Xubuntu into an old laptop and now it's enjoining a brand new life

Everything works flawlessly and it is FAST.

This experience made want to go a little deeper into the possibilities of having a Linux DAW and I discovered that there are actually projects going on...

My question is: can we expect to have commercial musical applications running on Linux? I mean: will we ever have Live, Cubase, etc.?

For istance: I'd like to ask to Zauni what would it mean (in terms of hours of work) to make Jamstix available for Rosegarden (or other applications). Should you re-write the program from scratch?

A LINUX version of Jamstix would be a major undertaking that we cannot afford at this time but we'd LOVE to do this in the future when resources are available.

It's great that you think like that

And I guess you are not the only one out there:)

In general, I think that the real question is: who's got to do the first step? I mean, a lot of people are not ready to switch to Linux because they would not find the software they need; on the other hand, many developers cannot afford the costs of producing software for a 'small' community.....

Not an easy puzzle...but I think we'll go through many changes in the next few years. Let's wait and see!
