emulating a drum ending fill/breakdown/freeform ending

Post by Jae.Thomas »

So, this is the same song I was working on here:

http://rayzoon2.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8497

but this is a different subject which might be valued by others so I am starting a new thread.

You know how lots of songs have this like drum solo at the end that is totally free form, maybe a 2-4 bars (or longer in some rare cases) and then ends with a big stop with all the instruments?

https://youtu.be/lncr2g9XJHU?t=204

there's an example.

Well, I am trying to do the same thing with my friend's song here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/k3fk70qlxmujs ... l.mp4?dl=0

tne ending of this song has exactly that, but with other instruments joining in.

How do I replicate something like this?

Here's my attempt:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/cas2dh36x4clk ... 9.j2d?dl=0

also the master and drum stem

https://www.dropbox.com/s/o8da9u91dbtxj ... r.mp3?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/l4g05ozf5wwxs ... 3.mp3?dl=0

any help appreciated, learning a lot lately!

Yeah, the Rock and Roll coda/tag first came to mind.

Maybe something like:

LAST PART
Stop
Drum Solo (set to 2/4, (depending) swing all the way up on 1/8th, focus on snare turned up, structure uniform turned up, STOPS > Time = downbeat Sound = KICK/HAT 100%, 100% chance

Hah, it's locked up Reaper at the moment while it's running looped.... Have to try to change a setting on it in order for Reaper's transport STOP to work. Ahrgh.

Thank you, that helps a lot. I really don't think it's reasonable to say that the ending is going to be exactly the same as the recording, but the closer I can get to it the better.

I really appreciate your suggestions and I will take care of that when I'm back in the studio. I'll see what I can come up with.

:)

as it turns out, I was totally off. It was literally just a cymbal swell, and a tom thing. jhaha

but, learning this stuff was super helpful and I appreciate it.

every time I run into a problem, I learn more and more - and Jamstix is still amazing after all these years.

Here's the finished project (for now):
