Using the latest version of Reaper and Jamstix 3 demo...loads up fine and when I click on the various drums I hear sound but I hve a real dumb question. How do you get Jamstix to play? I don't see a play button. I loaded up one of the demo songs but can't get it to play. Thanks for any help to what is most likely a real dumb question. I enclosed a screen cap of what I see.

This is an easy confusion for newcomers: aside from the function to loop-audition a single measure, Jamstix only plays in synchronization with the host. What that means is that you have to click the little “lock” icon in the upper left section (to “lock” Jamstix to the host) and then click play (or record) in Reaper. Jamstix will then follow the playing position in Reaper.

If you use time signatures other than 4/4, you also must be sure keep the time signatures in Reaper in exact correspondence with what you’ve set up in Jamstix — if you change one and forget to change the other, Jamstix will play something, but not what you intended... I’ve had a number of “wtf?!?” moments before realizing I changed something on one side and forgot to change the other to match.

Okay I think I got it all worked out now. I hve sound and it plays along fine....Not sure which routing configuration I shld be choosing though. If I choose the one it gives me 8 tracks of Jamstix but only records to one. If I choose the other it gives me one track and records on that but says it is it is only the stereo 1/2 audio will be heard. I enclosed to screen caps of what I see. I love the program and will be buying it as soon as I get all this worked out. Thanks for the help.

When using multiple outputs, make sure to UNcheck 'Downmix' in the JS3 mixer.

That’s a matter of whether you prefer to mix the drums as separate tracks in Reaper (as if you had one microphone on the kick, one on the snare, one on the cymbals, etc.) or just have a single, stereo drum track that’s sub-mixed using Jamstix’s own mixer and effects.

To use a simple, stereo mix, select [b:7f4ee63955]No[/b:7f4ee63955] in the Reaper dialog about routing configuration and be sure [b:7f4ee63955]Downmix[/b:7f4ee63955] is lit up in Jamstix’s [b:7f4ee63955]Mixer[/b:7f4ee63955] tab. (If [b:7f4ee63955]Downmix[/b:7f4ee63955] isn’t lit, you’ll only hear the Kick drum. If I’m remembering correctly, changing the Kit will sometimes change the [b:7f4ee63955]Downmix[/b:7f4ee63955] setting, so if suddenly you hear only Kick... see if it got turned off.)

Personally, I recommend this as an easier way to start — unless you’re already used to mixing real drum kits with multiple mics, in which case I presume it would be easier to use Jamstix the same way.

Remember, also, that the Reaper configuration dialog is just an offer from Reaper to set up that routing for you in one step. You can do all or part of that routing (depending on whether you’re really using all eight outputs) manually at any time as you work with the project. Then, on Jamstix’s [b:7f4ee63955]Mixer[/b:7f4ee63955] tab, you’d dim [b:7f4ee63955]Downmix[/b:7f4ee63955] so as to send each channel to a different output.
