JS4 Running Under Ubuntu Studio (Linux) with yabridge

I have perused the topics here and it looks like the last version of Jamstix documented to run successfully under Linux using WINE was JS3. I ran into issues with JS3 and with nothing left to lose decided to take a shot at getting JS4 working in Ubuntu Studio. With some help from robert-vdh (the yabridge developer), I have it running and it seem to be working well.

I ran into two issues that I was able to resolve or work around:

ISSUE 1
When launching the Jamstix4Manager.exe, I had some difficulty entering my license key. The trick is as follows:
- Copy the license key text to the clipboard.
- Then launch Jamstix4Manager.exe. You may have to drag the window to see everything.
- Then as a single action, double click the license field and press CTRL+V to quickly paste the key into the field. This took about 5 or 6 tries but once the license pasted properly, everything else worked as expected.

ISSUE 2:
The Kit tab would show a black screen instead of the 3D drumkit. Robert-vdh recommended installing dxvk into my wine prefix to handle the graphics issues. Once I did that everything started working. Here's the discussion:

https://github.com/robbert-vdh/yabridge/issues/74

INSTALLATION DETAILS:

In case anyone else has wanted to try this, here is a list of kit pieces I used to get everything working:

- Operating system: Ubuntu Studio 20.04
- wine version: '6.0-rc3 (Staging)'
- dxvk (you'll need this installed into your wine prefix to see the 3D kits, see above).
- winetricks to install corefonts (google it).
- yabridge version: 2.2.1
- yabridgectl version: 2.2.1
- Jamstix 4.4.6

Hope this helps others :)

That's really decent of you to put together this report for other Linux users taji. Hope it works really well for you.

Thanks :) . Linux can be a bit of a challenge so hoping this helps someone else. It's taken me a good week or two to get all of the different pieces (hosts, plugins, etc) together.

One thing with Linux that is nice is that everything is command line driven, so as I've been installing and configuring the Linux side of things, I've been writing a bash script that automates the work. This should cut the time down considerably if I move to a new laptop.

I can attest to that based upon the few times I dabbled in it. It has gotten much better than in the past though with Mint and the newer more user friendly distros.

I have issues with the installer itself -

"Error sending data (-2146893051). This tool requires you to be connected to the internet unless you have prepared an offline installation package"

So how does one create such a package?

I'm not in front of my computer with my JS installation but it is done with the Jamstix Manager on an online computer under "Install Options".

haha, ok well that isn't going to work then, as Jamstix Manager as I wrote above will not install becasue of the issue I also mentioned in the post.

Thanks for sharing this! I have Jamstix 4 working in AV Linux MXE.

One observation is that I couldn't run Jamstix 4 Manager with dxvk installed. Once I uninstalled dxvk,Jamstix Manager ran ran fine. For my system, run Jamstix Manager first and then install dxvk before running the plugin.

Hello everyone, I am wondering if someone here can help me get Jamstix 4 going on AV Linux 19.4? I have followed the steps in Taji's post as closely as possible and am getting the following output (but no Jamstix):

err: DxvkInstance: Failed to create instance
info: Game: Jamstix4Manager.exe
info: DXVK: v1.10.1
info: Built-in extension providers:
info: Win32 WSI
info: OpenVR
info: OpenXR
info: OpenVR: could not open registry key, status 2
info: OpenVR: Failed to locate module
info: Required Vulkan extension VK_KHR_surface not supported
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'dxvk::DxvkError'

I am by no means a Linux expert but am happy to get my hands dirty in the terminal, if someone here would be kind enough to give me a few pointers.

Best wishes.

Robert.
