is it possible for midi jam play in time with a midi bassline or is it just for playing loops?

Do make sure you understand what 'Jam' means in this instance.
From my understanding, it means JS can modify the drummer behaviour (volume and business) based on the MIDI velocity of notes coming into JS - i.e. just like it does when you turn up/down the power knob.

It does not interpret the actual note pitches or timing to 'play along' with the MIDI input, it plays its own beats (and is usually synced to the VST host).

Ralph has suggested to me in the past that he could work on the 'Instant Hits or compose drums based on live MIDI input' feature - V4? I'm hoping.

Triggering a kick/snare combo based on incoming MIDI data is being worked on for future versions.
