I've just started with this program and while I can see the possibilities, I've been frustrated with my purchase.

I bought this program to "drive" my Superior Drummer. I am unable to do so - so far. Does anyone know how to accomplish this (in detail)? I am using Sonar X1, but it is more about the JS than the DAW.

I use Reaper, but the workflow with X1 should be similar (I started to make a custom skin for Jamstix, so don't mind the "strange" look).

1. Create a new track and put JS in it.

2. Open JS and create a song. Click "Wizard" button, then click "Create song" button.

3. Go to "KIT" tab and click on "Standard" kit to change it.

4. In the kit selection window, scroll down to find the "Toontrack" thread. Click small "+" to unfold it. Choose one of possible kits. Load it by clicking "OK".

5. If you haven't used SD2 before from JS, JS will ask you to point to the SD2 VSTi (dll). Find it somewhere in your filesystem, select it and confirm. After everything is done, this is how "KIT" window should look (or something similar).

6. Go to "MIXER" tab, open the menu and select one of output routings. Note that only 8 output channels are visible in JS mixer view. JS can output to 16+1 output channels, though. Select the desired number of channels in "OPTIONS" tab. You can also downmix to stereo and/or choose to include/exclude ambient channel.

7. You can open the SD2 interface by clicking on module name and selecting "Open plugin interface", if you want to tweak SD2 mixer or kit pieces or whatever.

You will get your usual SD2 window inside JS "Configure VSTi" subwindow, like this

Now, start playback in your DAW and you should hear drums playing (note that there is a 1-bar silence if you used standard "Create song" button!).

As is the case with any complex tool, you need some time to learn using JS. Be patient, it's worth it!

All channels are routed from SD2 internal mixer, except "Percussions" channel, which is set up to receive audio from drumsticks and chimes directly from JS.

Thanks man. You are a wealth of information. I have had SD for a while and am very familiar with it. I've been using Groove3 for my CW X1 videos as I don't use Reaper.

My main concern is digging into JS and seeing what it can do. I'll see if Groove3 has a JS tutorial.

The skin in the illustrations above of Jamstix 3 have a flat grey skin rather than the more elaborate 3D metal appearance: is this a standard or custom skin?

That's my try at custom skinning Jamstix. Far from finished yet, though.
