Jamstix & REAPER

Post by Suprchrged_Si »

After looking at it even further, it seems that the whole thing dies when I try to save the presets with EzDrummer, or try to make any sort of save whatsoever. I get it working with multichannel routing and everything, then try to either save the whole thing as a track template, or load up a different kit, and all of a sudden, all the audio goes out on all the channels, including the main channel. I can still see the red MIDI trigger go off every time I click a drum, and I even tried the REAPERBypass option, but all to no avail. I'm doing this in both 32-bit and 64-bit(bridged) version of Reaper. Someone please help.

Figured out what the problem was. I had all the Drum tracks set as daughter tracks to the main track, which was set as a midi track. This made all the other tracks in the folder MIDI tracks, with no Audio outputs. Once I disabled the folder, all the audio came out loud and clear. Sorry for the false alarm.

Just to clarify for you, Reaper doesn't have separate Audio and MIDI tracks. The issue, in this case, was likely that the audio got sent back through your Jamstix track, since it was the folder, and Jamstix doesn't pass the audio through. The solution is the same - don't have JS on the folder track - but I just wanted to point out that small difference.

Thanks for the clarification. I didnt think it was processed differently, but I always prefer to learn more about the intricacies of Reaper routing if I can. I appreciate the help!

Jamstix & REAPER

I wanted to buy reaper and upgrade to Jamstix 3 but I am reluctant to do so because I'm having problems trying to evaluate Reaper and Jamstix.

I frequently lose all data and Jamstix shows the Quickstart page when re-opening a saved project. This seems to happen even when I've fully stopped Reaper before saving.

Then, if the Jamstix song does load most of the time the kit will not load. All I get is silence or just one or two drums loading (usually just the kick).

Finally, all, or just some of the data entry "sliders" in the Groove composition area seem to dissapear when re-loading a project!

For example, here are two screen shots, the upper shows the Groove area with only three sliders (the red arrow shows the blank screen where the remaining sliders should be). When I re-load the drummer for this part, the sliders return, shown on the lower screen shot.

I'm assuming that these problems must be down to my old PC and/or something wrong with my configuration as most people here seem to be able to use Jamstix and Reaper.

I am only swapping to Reaper as my previous sequencer, Tracktion, had all kinds of problems with audio glitches. What's annoying is that Jamstix seemed to work OK with Tracktion!

Hey Brendan,
Check that the missing sounds (only the kick playing) isn't just a routing issue. It always gets me!!
I really must set up a template track for it to save me 10 minutes of stuffing about each time. There's quite a few post in the forum about it.
As for old PCs, my old P4 struggles - I set up a different project for JS and render it as audio to import! Not Reaper or JS specific but JS is usually the only VSTi that I use.

No. I thought that the only way I could get it was by pre-ordering JS3.
Looking again, it seems that I can try the public Beta.

I'll give it a go.

Many thanks Ralph.

Thanks for the advice.
I used to get caught out by the routing thing a lot. This isn't that - the kit usually plays fine at first but it's when I reload the Reaper project that various drums go missing!

I know that my PC isn't the best but Jamstix seemed to run OK on Tracktion - it was just the move to Reaper that has screwed things up.

To be honest I find Jamstix brilliant and infuriating in equal parts. The basic concept is brilliant but I can never get it to do quite what I want it to. Always something will never quite repeat properly or I'll think I'm adjusting a snare parameter and the kick will suddenly drop out.

I think what Ralph has created is amazing but I increasingly think it's a design philosophy thing or maybe I'm just using it the wrong way.

For example, I never really use the interactive jam feature. I think I just want to drop a few basic patterns down to create a song and manually edit things a bit to give a bit of variation and match certain parts of the rhythm with parts of the song (emphasising certain riffs with hits etc.).

I'm beginning to think that there are much simpler ways of doing this and that maybe Jamstix is just too complex for my needs.

Brendan: here is a workflow that might fit you best:

a) Check 'Downmix' in the mixer so you'll hear all sounds even if the REAPER output routing is not set up.

b) Create your own grooves in the bar editor by setting style and drummer to 'Silent' in a part and then editing a bar while the preview function is on so it is looping (round arrow on bar editor). Place notes as desired until the groove is what you want. Now save the groove via the bar editor menu.

c) repeat B for any other grooves you want in the song.

d) now create parts for the song as needed (verse, chorus etc.) and use the 'Import' style on them. Select the correct saved groove from B for each part.

Jamstix is now set to use your grooves for each part. You can load drummer models to add accents and idiosyncrasies and you can also use 'Add' in the brain menu to load additional style features on top of your groove.
