another \'how can i make this beat?\' request

Post by TheSystem (Archive) »

Hi folks

I am working on a new tune. I want to do a drum track similar to this tune:

Any suggestions on Drummer/Style and setting suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I was trying to make a simple beat, and people here on the forum recommended me to use a Country or Rock style to start with, using 'Charlie' the rock drummer ,one of the less technical, more straightforward ones.

Sounds like you might be headed for something similar ?

that is where i started. i cannot seem to get it with the country styles so i moved on to Basic Rock. i am still not there.

thanks for the tips

ps. i am going to try Phil next. i have had luck with him for simpler beats. phil if you are reading this, no offence (spelled with a 'c' even mate). :)

I'd use a slow 4/4, around 70BPM or so. I'd try the 'Basic 4' presets from 'Standard Rock' in the 'Toolbox' folder as is for the chorus.

For the verse, I'd simplify it by un-checking all cells under 'Kick' except the first one.

For the snare ghosting, I'd experiment with the standard 'Snare Ghosts' accent control. You may want to bias it forward during the verse.

ralph

i tried the suggestions. the feel is not what i am after.

this video might make it easier to hear what is going on. i think what this guy is doing will work for my song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9iVYm2yhyo

he starts around 1:08s. he is doing what sounds like some triplets here and there on the HHs. and of course some ghosting as you noted.

Looks like you need to set the hihat to 'Gallop' to get the pattern you want.

If you want to have the galloping limited, use 'Extract From Other Style' to get another hihat from the 'Standard Rock' style. Now set the first one to '8th', the second to 'Gallop', right-click the header on the second one and check 'BIAS'. Now you can use the BIAS knob to have the galloping constant (0%) or move it forward or backward within the bar.

Exactly, I don’t hear triplets, but 8ths and some gallops. I must confess I didn’t know how to balance the amount of both like you explain here, Ralph. Another reason to read always each thread that is created.

i am in the ballpark now. i found the SWING and TIME functions were also not set right and messing with the feel i am after.

i plan to work more on it and am confident i can get the feel now.

any suggestions of a great JS kit that would get me to similar tones?

thanks again and happy new year

When I was creating my Delvon Lamarr organ trio backing tracks applying swing really helped.

The 'Basic 4' presets from 'Standard Rock' in the 'Toolbox' folder worked in that effort also (as recommended by Ralph).
