Request: Country music drummer style

Ralph,

Just wondering if you have ever considered creating a country music drummer style. Something like 'Eddie Bayers'. Everything country. Brushes to full kit, but in the style.

Maybe I'm missing a lot.. I've tried to simplify the kits, turn down a lot of style features in the brain, but it's still not a simple country groove.

Or maybe a way to modify an existing one? If it's a rocking country tune, some of the simple rock styles work... Otherwise, too fancy, too many ghost notes, etc.

I agree. I'd often like to start with something simple (but not necessarily a basic rock or blues style) and add to that instead of subtracting ghost notes, fills, accents, etc. I think it would be good to have very basic country and jazz styles and drummers in addition to what's provided. I've made my own "starting styles" but it wouldn't hurt to have them built in.

It seems to me that the Country market is huge. Would be a worth while addition to Jamstix. Every Ezdrummer+Nashville pack user might be a potential new Jamstix user.

Anyone care to share what they do to get a 'close to country' groove out of Jamstix?

Maybe we can build a 'list of notes' to refer to.

But what kind of "country" beats would we ask Ralph to put in?

TBH, country nowadays seems indistinguishable from straight up rock and roll, except for more fiddles, steel slides, etc. There are 4/4 hard rockers and ballads, waltz-time fast and slow songs, etc.

Oldies country songs might be easier to write for (two-step beats, whatever the "Asleep at the Wheel" kind of beats are).

Can anyone please post examples of country songs that have beats that aren't found in the existing drummers/styles/etc.?

That's true about the newer music for sure. I think simpler over all. If you listen to some of the music that is following the 'classic country' style, it's just simplicity. Alan Jackson Chattahoochee for example. Some of Vince Gills hits, Kick and side snare hits. Simple fills. No ghost notes. Drums were second to the music in general, but 'right there'.

I need to make some grooves on my own maybe. Then teach Charlie or James Stix (my normal for country) to stop playing ghost notes, and simplify the fills.

Maybe we could all work on making these adjustments, and share how we did it. Brushes seem to be the hardest as I recall. Getting a simple kit, brush sound, and brush player all together for a simple two-step beat.

Admittedly, I'm not great on Jamstix. Even though I've used it now for three years, but forget in between times.
