Help with odd time sigs and groove

Post by brelic_ »

Just trying to create nice odd time signature grooves similar to Tool and Karnivool.

The problem I'm trying to solve is that I have a hard time finding a default setting where the drum beat has a nice coherent groove instead of kind of all over the place. For example, if I create an 11/8 groove, and I want the punches on 5 and 11, it would be nice if my starting groove were nice and simple and I could build on that.

As an example of a type of groove I'm looking for, here are two Tool songs (the opening drum grooves in particular)

And a Karnivool song

On top of that, I'm not quite sure which drummer and style to choose.. I've tried Custom Rock, Eclectic Rock, Prog metal, Nu-metal, and a few others with varying degrees of success.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Advice for first song:

- set host to 5/4
- load 'Standard Rock' style from 'Toolbox'
- load drummer 'Danny'
- play host so JS sees the time sig, brain should show five columns for kick and snare
- click snare cell col 5 row 3
- adjust synco kicks as needed
