If it's about speed, USB2 is actually faster than firewire.
Firewire is ~400Mb/S
USB2 is ~480Mb/S.
USB3, if anybody ever gets around to making USB3 stuff, is something like 7 times faster than USB2.
USBX, which I just made up, works via telepathy so it's smokin' fast. Ooops. Nobody was supposed to know about that...
USB2 has a technical throughput of greater than 1394A, but is requires "micro"-managing by the CPU and in practice, rarely outperforms FW. FW is a much more process friendly network interface, as the hardware looks after much of the polling and communication protocol stuff.

RME have the right idea -use 1394B (FW800) and [i:3adc9fc60b]turbocharge[/i:3adc9fc60b] it! :)
Yep, Firewire 400 in practice is definitely better than USB2, given equivalent peripherals (and a crowded bus). Plus you can push up to 40W DC over it.

And I'm not sure where he gets the idea nobody's making USB3 stuff? Hasn't been shopping lately, maybe.

What we really want is Thunderbolt... 10 Gb/S [i:3adc9fc60b]per device[/i:3adc9fc60b] (though only 10W DC)

I emailed Rain Computers to ask if they had a laptop with firewire that [b:8a5766d0ff]copes with audio[/b:8a5766d0ff]. They don't.

I've ordered a STEINBERG MR816 CSX and a YAMAHA MOTIF RACK XS with the YAMAHA FW16E FIREWIRE EXPANSION..

Hi, all. I just wanted to stand up and be counted here. Jamstix is a brilliant, inspiring, and truly unique program - but a real pita to use the Mac hack! Will 2013 be the year for a Jamstix Mac version?

I hope an OSX version this year. It's the only product to need my old PC version and i was not able to synchronize the hack version with logic.
If it need to pay additionnal bucks to get it (in a reasonable meaning), i will do it.
So i made a pray every day as i take a look on the jamstix page site...

I've been doing this for 2 1/2 years now, since originally posting in this thread...

I bought JS3 as an act of faith, I've never used it. It's just sitting in my user area, along with Jamcussion & the expansion packs I also paid for.

Just being willing to put up with this is a testament to how much we like your software, Ralph - but really, something besides the same "We're working on it." statement would be nice. Some kind of progress report, or screenshot of whatever you have...anything would be reassuring at this point.

FWIW - After a long long run with cubase and windows, I bought a mac and am using logic for our next album. I miss jamstix! There's nothing like it and the jamstix brain that triggers BFD2 in AU would be a great leap in a new direction...

Here is where we are: the non-visual aspects of Jamstix OSX are working quite well in the internal Betas. The visual interface is having serious issues, including unacceptable CPU usage. These problems are in a 3rd party framework that we are using. We have spent enormous time trying to solve those issues and waiting for the vendor to fix/improve them as well. Since we can't wait any longer, we are now rebuilding the visual interface with a different framework from another vendor, which appears to be much faster and efficient. I cannot estimate time for this task properly as it depends on any migration issues that the new framework might throw at us.

The good news is that A.I., audio engine, data management, song structures etc. are all working on OSX by now so things are progressing. We just have to get the interface done and then we can go Beta with you guys.

This is amazing and well appreciated news Ralph! Thanks so much for the update! I've been monitoring these Mac topic threads since I ditched Windows in 2011. Patience is a virtue, and I have had nothing but complete faith in you and your excellent product and support.
