Will We Ever Be Able To Do 9/4 Time?

Post by CudBucket »

I know JS3 supports up to 7/4. Of course, I need 9/4. Is it within the realm of possibility to add 9/4? If not, I'd love to be able to loop over 2 bars: the first in 4/4 and the second in 5/4. This way, I could work out the grooves for my guitar parts that are in 9/4.

Thanks.

The problem is that 9/4 requires a very wide bar editor. Only a small percentage of users would ever use it and the rest would be using a bar editor that wastes over 50% of its size.

We may develop a bar editor that operates on more than one bar in the future though we are weary of increased complexity.

Thanks for the quick response Ralph. I understand that 9/4 would require a wide bar.

I think being able to loop on 2 bars though would cover the needs of people who write in odd time signatures. It would allow us to "create" the sigs not native to JS3. For ex. a 4/4 and 5/4 make 9/4. Or a 6/4 and 7/4 make a 13/4, etc., etc.

Again, thanks as always Ralph.

i actually just ran into this exact issue last night and ended up becoming really disappointed that i basically couldn't use the plugin for any riff in the entire song due to the "different" time sigs throughout. and i'm finding that over the past year or so, any song i've written wouldn't work (i've generally just created my own clips by hand). i did try to attempt to just simply use a 5/4 and then 4/4 but it didn't ever seem to work out properly as the fills and hits i was hoping for wouldn't happen--the feel just didn't ever work out. tho maybe there's a way to set up multiple measured riffs that i just don't know about--if there is--i'm all ears, just let me know! (i.e any random number of measures in varying time signatures to eventually add up to the actual one i need--oh but also it has to actually be easy to create in the song editor--it didn't seem like that would be the case)

in the end, i'd hope that *any* time signature is available in the (hopefully near) future as an update.

if the issue is just a UI concern, that could be easily [assuming] adjusted for with something like a pop-in scrollbar if the UI needs to pass a certain point. or just make the ability to have a larger UI as an option like the overall ability to change time signatures in the first place.

as an aside, i also ran into an issue trying to import a 5/4 groove clip and the plugin always skipped over playing the 5th beat--just used silence. something i could have done wrong, but i checked a few times to make sure the clip was 5/4 - enough beats.

hopefully you can come up with a solution to this as the product holds a great amount of promise imo--but currently i can't really use it as i had hoped currently (again, unless there's just something i'm missing--which is possible ;)

or maybe it's just something in the manual/ or workflow that i'm just missing in general?!

Could you send me the 5/4 clip you were trying to import?

Also, for 9/4 I would do this:

- create a 5/4 part followed by a 4/4 part with proper time sig assignment
- copy/paste the two parts in JS as needed
- create fitting 5/4 and 4/4 time changes in the host and copy/paste as needed
- save the project as a template for future projects
- load styles/drummers as needed

thanx for the reply ralph!

i'm at work right now so next time i fire up the music computer i'll send off the clip (it was just made/ exported from sonar)

and i'll give your suggestion a try! thanx!!!!

oh and side note: the thing with the "odd" time signatures has really grown exponentially in the metal community with the "djent" genre (i.e. meshuggah-esque) so having the ability to have *any* time sig is very beneficial to that expanding group (they also seem to be the group buying up [awesome] toontrack products! ;p so something to think about for the future maybe...?

Something that might allow more extreme time signatures, yet keep things simple for those who don't need them, would be a setting (maybe next to 'allow odd time signatures) where the user sets the maximum number of beats allowed, and the interface changes(maybe with a scrollbar) to show this. The users who need to do stuff in 9/4, 13/8, or 19/16,for example, would be covered, but the majority, who don't stray from 'normal' meters would never notice anything different.

increased complexity would be undesirable - however, perhaps something could be programmed in which would expand the bars as needed, and to users with a more simple timesig need, it would be unnecessary? Until then, 7/4 isnt too bad :) and there are workarounds.
