Snare Sounds

I just wanted to ask a couple of similar questions related to getting specific snare sounds.
1. What do you suggest to help tighten up a snare sound (less bounce), without going to a smaller diameter drum.
In this example I believe I'm using a 14" birch.
(I'm thinking maybe compression, but not sure).
2. How do I make the snare sound deadened (hit with no bounce at all)?
Ex. like when a song is about to change direction/rthym etc.

I would use EQ to tighten up that snare. Try a parametric EQ, create a large boost, and roll around the frequencies until you find the spot(s) where the bounce and whatever else you want removed are most apparent. Then change the boost to a cut at that spot.

As for deadening the snare, you could try a gate. You'll need to play with the attack and fade to get it to sound like a natural decay, minus the bounce.

Please also experiment with the DMP knob in the kit editor, which controls the sustain and thus dampens the sound.
