MIDI import - can you use an entire song?

Post by mered33_ »

Hello,

I've watched the tutorial video, and it seems that the MIDI import functionality is designed for short individual loops. However, I tried it out with a whole track, and it works amazingly well - hearing the Jamstix drummers reinterpret the drum parts from classic songs is totally inspiring.

The problem I'm having is that the maximum part length is 64 bars, and most songs are much longer than that. Is there a way to have Jamstix 'play' imported MIDI files of arbitrary length all the way through, or will I need to chop them up first into intro/verse/chorus etc and rebuild the song in the song sheet?

Many thanks for any help! :-)

Hi mered33,

Ralph stated in another post that 64 bars is the limit for midi import. So you will have to break up the midi track and reassemble it as you suspected.

Thanks for your reply.

I had another play around with this, and I ended up exporting Jamstix's performance in 64 bar chunks and then doing a bit of manual tidying in Reaper's MIDI editor. Not ideal, but it does work.

Two things:

1. Is there a generally accepted workflow for making cover versions? I've done a search of the forum, and what I've mainly found is people recreating the parts manually, which kind of defeats the point of using Jamstix at all as far as I'm concerned.

What I want to be able to do is say to Jamstix, as I might to a human drummer, is "OK, today we're going to cover 'Crazy Train'. Here's the score. Play it pretty much as written, but feel free to put your own stamp on it here and there."

2. Just in case Ralph reads this - I've already bought Jamstix, but I'd pay for this functionality right now :-).

We're planning to break the 64-bar barrier for MIDI import in Jamstix 4.

That's great news :-). I will certainly be upgrading when it's released.
