<t>I would have to agree with AZ, the variations from Jamstix 4 is untouchable. I do use (and like) EZD3, but when I am writing a song from scratch I usually go with Jamstix. I can get the feel I am looking for instead of searching patterns. <br/>

What are the best Practices for non-uniform parts?

I would create a short one or two bar section of what you want, then save that as a style and then let Jamstix drummer do the rest.
